Agenda - AKCMM Project Launch in Malaysia:

Officially launch the AKCMM project in Malaysia, marking the start of implementation activities supported by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund and GGGI.
Introduce the AKCMM initiative and raise stakeholder awareness, highlighting its regional scope, national relevance, and the importance of methane mitigation in priority sectors such as waste and energy.
Foster stakeholder alignment and buy-in by communicating how AKCMM supports Malaysia’s climate goals, NDC targets, NCCP 2.0, and methane-related policy efforts.

AKCMM Project Launch in Malaysia - July 31st:

Methane reduction was framed as an urgent and cost-effective climate action priority, with Mr. Chiden Balmes (GGGI) emphasizing its potency and contribution to current global warming. He highlighted the AKCMM project as a $20 million regional initiative and stressed the importance of regional collaboration despite operational challenges in-country.
The Government of Korea reaffirmed its long-term partnership with ASEAN through the AKCMM platform. Ms. Jisun Jun (Embassy of the Republic of Korea) emphasized that the project represents a new paradigm where methane reduction aligns with sustainable economic growth. She also highlighted Korea's commitment to supporting public-private partnerships and policy exchange across the region.
ASEAN positioned the AKCMM project as a key pillar in regional sustainability efforts, with H.E. San Lwin (ASEAN Secretariat) noting its alignment with the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Strategic Plan and ASEAN's climate targets. He called for participation from national agencies and sub-national governments and praised the initiative as a catalyst for knowledge sharing and cooperation under ASEAN frameworks.
Malaysia reaffirmed its climate leadership and commitment to methane mitigation, as shared by H.E. Datuk Nor Yahati (NRES). Her remarks linked AKCMM to national policies such as NCCP 2.0, the NDC-RAP, and LT-LEDS. She identified palm oil and oil & gas as priority sectors, referenced the Global Methane Pledge, and called methane reduction a "strategic imperative" requiring public-private collaboration.
GGGI's presentation elaborated on the strategic alignment of AKCMM with Malaysia's national climate framework, noting the project's contribution to improving MRV systems, advancing low-carbon development, and supporting green economic diversification. Malaysia's recent 21% methane reduction from the energy sector (2019 - 2021) was highlighted as a baseline for further gains.
